Mere Christianity (Second Wind)

“In the same way a Christian is not a man who never goes wrong, but a man who is enabled to repent and pick himself up and begin over again after each stumble because the Christ-life is inside him, repairing him all the time, enabling him to repeat (in some degree) the kind of voluntary death which Christ Himself carried out." - C.S. Lewis

This quote struck me because it portrays the best part of Christianity. The part of Christianity I am talking about is the ability to pick yourself back up again after you have asked for forgiveness from God. We are all human and we have all sinned, but is it not the greatest thing? More importantly, I can personally admit that I have screwed up big before and comfort was hard to find, but through my repentance and reconciliation from God; I am able to find comfort.

Another aspect I loved about this quote was when Lewis speaks about how if the "Christ-life" is inside man it is always repairing him and mending him, allowing him to repeat and live a new life. Additionally, they receive as second wind, if you would so call, almost like the second wind, or life, of Christ. Christ died to give us our undeserving new life.

For me there is no better comfort than realizing that God always has my back and will forgive me when I have fallen short. I love my faith and this aspect of it. After all, how can you progress in your faith if you don not first forgive yourself and ask forgiveness from God. It is after this you will progress and go farther in your faith.

My choices have been affected, not in the way that they will change, but in a way that I must think of what it means to be forgiven and why am I able to a receive an new life? It must realize the importance of this and what it took for me to have this. Why should go against what the man who sent his son to die for me says?

In conclusion, this quote brings to mind the importance of Christ' death and how it was able to produce a new life for you. It is only after we realize this that we are able to receive our new life.

  1. I love this quote! There are plenty of people who do not think that once they commit a big sin, like a murder, that there is someone out there that will completely forgive them and love them unconditionally. It is so nice knowing that God will forgive me no matter what. That does not mean we all go out and live our lives saying "YOLO" after everything we do. That just means we are only human and we make mistakes, and God will forgive our sins no matter how big or small they are. Thank you Eric for this and going into detail about it! :)

  2. Great thoughts Eric! Some choppy sentence fluency, and a few typos-- let's work on smoothing out your thought expression this year. Start by trying to eliminate unnecessary words-- make things straight forward and concise. But again, some encouraging words and your blog title-- "Second Wind" is a great analogy for the renewal we find in Christ!
